Mykonos "The cosmopolitan Cyclades Island"

Mykonos island is situated in the middle of Greek Cyclades Islands and is now the island groups most cosmopolitan holiday destination with it being branded as the "Ibiza of Greece."

As well as its modern image it is also famous for its minimal Cyclades architecture with its whitewashed traditional houses and blue dombed churches but its most well know architectural buildings are windmills found in the Little Venice area of Mykonos Town.

How to get there.

You can fly directly into the island from a expanding number of destinations particular in the summer season from April to October when the major European holiday companies all offer trips here. The one thing I will say is the airport is extremely small, and in the popular summer months becomes extremely busy and chaotic at times as we personally experienced. So be prepared for this.

You can also travel by ferry from any of its sister islands in the Cyclades and from the main ferry port on the Greek mainland Piraeus.

But its also a major port destination for many cruise liners on Greek Islands or Eastern Mediterranean itineraries.  The main cruise port is a new purpose built pier just outside of Mykonos Town itself at Tourlos. From here you can walk into town in approx 20 minutes but be careful there are no footpaths and the road can get busy. Safer to take the frequent shuttle bus that runs from the pier into the town. Another option is the Water Taxi across from the cruise pier to the town Harbour.

Beaches

Mykonos has some really great beaches some of the best being in the south of the Island.  Such as Super Paradise Beach, Paradise Beach, Elia Beach and Psarou Beach.

If you are arriving from a cruise ship at Tourlos and just want to walk off the ship there is a beach just 15 minutes walk from the pier. Agios Stefanos Beach is found as you walk out the port, turn left and keep to the low road around the coast you will come to the small beach with beds for hire and a couple of Tavernas behind it.

Mykonos Town

Mykonos Town or as its called by the locals Chora is a vibrant yet picturesque villiage, with its whitewashed buildings, it serves as the capital of the island. Take a walk through its labyrinth of narrow streets many filled with craft shops restaurants and cafes. As you walk through here you will find yourself in the Little Venice area of the town and just up a small hill from there you will see the famous Mykonos windmills. The area of the windmills is a great spot to watch the sunset and it is something you should see at least once. Its after this that Little Venice takes on another character with a vibrant nightlife, full of bars restaurants and clubs that party on into the early hours.

Delos Island

This is a tiny uninhabited island that can be visited from Mykonos Town, the island was sacred to the ancient Greeks as they believed the god Apollo was born there. There are ancient ruins of a sanctuary and theatre still able to be seen.

Wine Tasting on Vineyard visit.

Mykonos is a wine producing island, and if you like your wine you can visit the Mykonos Vioma vineyard, and as well as seeing the grape vines you can experience a wine tasting.

Where to stay

If your spending some time on the island there will be plenty choice in accommodation, as it has a number of hotel and apartment options to pick from as well as a growing list of more up market boutique hotels.

I do have a recommendation for a self catering option, on the occasion we stayed on the island we really enjoyed the With Inn. The property is situated half way between Mykonos Town and the port.  It's family run, offering a brilliant choice of refurbished modern apartments that retain there Greek influence.  The owners are always on hand to offer assistance with advice or even transport and are happy to pick you up from the port or airport.

So overall Mykonos is a beautiful island well worth a visit. Hope you enjoyed my experiences of our time spent there, if so feel free to share on social media etc.
